A woman in her 70s was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after an assault by a man who was arrested by police Friday, authorities said.
Police were called to the intersection of Russell and Otis streets at 4:30 p.m. for a report of a disturbance, according to a prepared statement released by police.
Police were told a woman was yelling for help. They arrived within minutes and saw a man flee on foot who matched the description provided by callers.
Police arrested the man in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way, near Russell.
Other officers found the woman suffering from severe injuries at the corner of Russell and Otis. They performed first aid until paramedics arrived and took her to the hospital.
Police did not provide any information about the nature of the woman’s injuries, and were not available by phone at the time of this report.
Investigators are actively working the case: conducting interviews, following up on leads and examining evidence, according to the prepared statement.
Police said, given the preliminary state of the investigation, they would not release the victim’s identity or the name of the man who was arrested.
