A bicyclist pedaling on Spruce near Eunice was seriously injured this morning when the bicyclist and a car collided, according to Berkeley police.

The accident happened at at 8:15 a.m. and the bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries, according to police. He or she was transported to the hospital.

The Fatal Accident Investigation Team is on the scene. The driver and witnesses are cooperating with investigators. Police have not said which party was at fault in the accident.

The police department is asking that  motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians avoid the intersection until noon or so. The intersection of Spruce and Eunice is closed was reopened around 1:40 p.m.

Police suggest they consider alternative routes for north-and south-bound traffic, such as: Oxford-Los Angeles-Spruce; or Euclid-Marin.

An update will be issued once the intersection is clear for through traffic.

The identity of the victim has not been released.

Update, Sept. 22: The bicyclist, a 62-year-old Berkeley resident, remains in critical condition at a local hospital. The driver, a 63-year-old Berkeley resident, is cooperating with police, according to Officer Jennifer Coats, spokeswoman for BPD.

Update, Sept, 23: Authorities have identified the cyclist as 62-year-old Kurt Wehner of Berkeley. He died Monday.
