Berkeleyside blotter: Crime in Berkeley, 10/30-11/5

This is a partial list of recent crimes in Berkeley, compiled by Berkeleyside, and based on reports to the Berkeley Police Department unless otherwise noted. The following items represent a sampling of calls, and times may be approximate.

From Oct. 30 to Nov. 5, there were reports of 21 burglaries, 19 auto break-ins or thefts from vehicles and six stolen vehicles, according to CrimeMapping.com. Five robberies, 20 assaults, domestic violence incidents or batteries and one sexual assault were reported. Significant incidents from the University of California Police Department included a burglary and a vehicle theft. These numbers are subject to change. Click the links above for the latest numbers.

Thursday, Oct. 30

A felony sexual assault was reported at midnight at Piedmont Avenue and Parker Street.

There were two robberies, at 12:26 a.m. at College Avenue and Webster Street, and at 11:03 a.m. at Hearst and McGee avenues.

There were two home burglaries, at 4 a.m. in the 1500 block of Oxford Street, and at 4 p.m. in the 2500 block of Hillegass Avenue.

Two vehicles were stolen, at 8 a.m. at College and Woolsey Street, and at 10 p.m. in the 2500 block of Warring Street.

Police responded to three disturbance calls: at 10:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Woolsey, and at 1:26 p.m. at Hillegass and Dwight Way (two calls).

There were two commercial burglaries, at 3:45 p.m. in the 1800 block of Fourth Street, and at 9:15 p.m. in the 2300 block of Hearst.

According to UCPD, a vehicle was stolen from the Underhill parking structure at 5:29 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 31

The University of California Police Department arrested 35-year-old Kaidi Clutchette at 8:16 a.m. on suspicion of felony possession for sale of narcotics. Clutchette has been arrested previously in Berkeley in connection with a sexual assault, a robbery and a battery, among other offenses. He is no longer in custody, according to the Alameda County sheriff’s department inmate locator.

Two vehicles were stolen, at 2:28 p.m. in the 2900 block of Shattuck Avenue, and at 11:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Durant Avenue.

There were three home burglaries: at 6 p.m. in the 1700 block of Spruce Street; at 9 p.m. in the 2300 block of Hearst; and at 10:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of College.

There was a robbery at 9:18 p.m. in the 2000 block of Dwight Way.

Police responded to two “second response” calls, at 11:23 p.m. in the 2300 block of Piedmont Avenue, and at 11:35 p.m. in the 2700 block of Bancroft Way.

According to a prepared statement released by the University of California Police Department: “UCPD received an anonymous letter from a third-party regarding a sexual assault at a fraternity located on Piedmont Avenue. The letter informed us that during the weekend of October 31st, 2014, the victim attended a Halloween party at the fraternity. The third-party reported that the victim believes she was drugged and sexually assaulted by a fraternity member. There is no more information regarding this crime at this time. The letter has been forwarded to the City of Berkeley Police Department.”

Saturday, Nov. 1

There were two felony assaults or batteries, at 12:53 a.m. at Bancroft and College, and at 2:51 a.m. at Durant and Piedmont avenues.

There was a home burglary at 10 a.m. in the 2900 block of Claremont Avenue.

Someone stole a 21-speed light green $350 Fuji road bike that had been locked to the bike racks at the Ashby BART station, according to the BART police. The theft took place between Oct. 31 at 10 p.m. and Nov. 1 at 2:30 p.m.

A vehicle was stolen at 3 p.m. in the 2100 block of Sacramento Street.

A man with a violent past in Berkeley was shot to death in North Oakland on Saturday, Nov. 1. Terryl Rucker, 26, was standing outside a neighborhood market on West Street south of 40th Street when he was gunned down,according to media reports. (This item appeared first in last week’s crime blotter for timeliness.)

A thief stole a 1995 blue Honda Prelude from the North Berkeley BART station parking lot between 2:30 p.m. and 9 p.m., according to the BART police.

Sunday, Nov. 2

Police handled a call involving a gun at 1:41 a.m. in the 2500 block of Dana Street. Police arrested a 38-year-old woman on suspicion of misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia in connection with this incident. Also arrested was 52-year-old felon Marc Frizzell on suspicion of carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle and carrying a loaded firearm in public. He remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail, with a bail of $225,000, and is set for a pre-trial hearing Nov. 13.

There was a home burglary at 5 p.m. in the 1300 block of Peralta Avenue.

Monday, Nov. 3

There were three commercial burglaries: at 3 a.m. in the 2200 block of Shattuck; at 4 p.m. in the 900 block of Camelia Street; and at 7:10 p.m. in the 1800 block of Fourth Street.

A vehicle was stolen at 6:45 a.m. in the 2000 block of Fourth Street.

According to UCPD, there was a burglary on campus in Tolman Hall at 11:16 a.m.

There were two home burglaries, at 11:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Bancroft, and at 10:16 p.m. in the 1100 block of University Avenue. Police arrested Cesar Hernandez, an 18-year-old bus boy, on suspicion of second-degree burglary in connection with the incident on Bancroft Way.

Police arrested Joseph Michael Mayfield, 26, on suspicion of second-degree burglary at 3:10 p.m. He was arrested in Richmond. He is no longer in custody. No further information is available.

Police handled a call involving a gun or other weapon at 3:24 p.m. at Allston Way and Milvia Street.

BART Police said a thief stole a catalytic converter from a Honda Accord parked at the North Berkeley BART station on Monday, Nov. 3, between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. (This item appeared first in last week’s crime blotter for timeliness.)

There was a robbery at 8:15 p.m. at Virginia and Curtis streets.

Tuesday, Nov. 4

There were three commercial burglaries: at 2:20 a.m. in the 1800 block of Solano Avenue; at 4:43 a.m. in the 2200 block of Sixth Street; and at 1:50 p.m. in the 1300 block of San Pablo Avenue.

There were two home burglaries, at 7:55 a.m. in the 2200 block of Glen Avenue, and at 8:39 p.m. in the 400 block of Kentucky Avenue.

There was a robbery at 8:23 p.m. in the 2400 block of Telegraph Avenue. Police arrested James Brisker, a 21-year-old security guard, and 20-year-old Jaymon Matthews on suspicion of second-degree robbery, several firearm-related violations and conspiracy. Neither remains in custody, and no case appears to be pending against them at this time, according to the Alameda County online criminal docket finder.

Wednesday, Nov. 5

A home was burglarized at 6 p.m. in the 1300 block of Talbot Avenue.

A business was burglarized at 7 p.m. in the 1800 block of Solano.

Police responded to a disturbance at 9 p.m. in the 2300 block of Shattuck.

A thief stole a gold-colored road bike from the North Berkeley BART station between 7:20 a.m. and 9:30 p.m., according to the BART police. It had been locked with a U-lock; both the bike and lock were stolen.

There was an arson at 11:21 p.m. in the 2200 block of San Pablo Avenue. Police arrested 49-year-old Charles Bachinski on suspicion of misdemeanor public intoxication and felony arson of property. He remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail with a bail of $5,000. He has previously been arrested in Berkeley in connection with battery causing serious bodily injury, criminal threats, exhibiting a deadly weapon other than a firearm, and other violations. He has also been arrested in Albany, on Solano Avenue, and by UCPD.
