A man with moderate injuries was taken by ambulance to Highland Hospital on Sunday evening after being struck by a driver in South Berkeley.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene at about 6 p.m. for a reported traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian, said Officer Byron White, a Berkeley Police spokesman.

White said the man had been listening to music through headphones while running westbound across Sacramento Street at Woolsey Street when the accident took place.

The driver, in a mid-size SUV, was northbound on Sacramento at the time of the accident. The driver stopped immediately and has been cooperative with investigators.

White said the preliminary statements from the driver and pedestrian were in agreement about how the accident took place, though the report is not complete.

Police issued no citations and made no arrests.

The Berkeley Fire Department took the man to Highland Hospital in Oakland, said White, adding that the man may have briefly lost consciousness. He was ultimately able to speak with first responders and provide a statement, however.

White said he did not have an update Monday about the pedestrian’s condition, and did not know whether he was still in the hospital or might have been released.

He said he could not comment on the cities of residence of the driver and man due to medical privacy laws.
