The Berkeley school district is seeking the community’s input as it ramps up its search for a new principal for Berkeley High School.
The high school is inviting parents and stakeholders to attend a meeting in the BHS Library on Tuesday Jan. 13 to share their thoughts about the leadership skills they believe are needed for the school.
The high school has been without a permanent principal since Pasquale Scuderi stepped down at the end of the last academic year, and took up the position of Berkeley Unified’s assistant superintendent for educational services. Scuderi was principal of Berkeley High for four years.
A brief search for a new principal in May 2014, after Scuderi announced his intention to leave, proved fruitless, despite BUSD Superintendent Donald Evans’ statement that they would find someone within a month.
BUSD spokesman Mark Coplan said there had not been a sufficient number of applicants.
At the time, Evans said he looking for the best person that could lead the school, which has a 3,300-strong student body. “I want someone who is going to work with the teachers, work with the community, but someone who is going to be kid-centered, making sure the kids are the number one priority,” Evans said.
Kristin Glenchur is currently acting principal at BHS. Glenchur, who has been vice-principal at Berkeley High for over six years, was absent from the campus for about six weeks shortly after she took up the post when she needed to take unplanned medical leave.
The district has hired the Cosca Group, which describes itself as “California’s premier educational consulting team,” to conduct a nationwide search for a permanent BHS principal. The consultants are very interested in gathering input from stakeholders in the next few weeks, according to an email sent to the BHS community.
The BHS principal community meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the BHS Library on Tuesday Jan. 13. The entrance to Berkeley High School is at 1980 Allston Way.
