Berkeley police arrested a 56-year-old man Thursday night on suspicion of attempted homicide in what appears to have been an incident of domestic violence, authorities said Friday afternoon.

Police arrested Theodore Roosevelt Carter at 11:48 p.m. Thursday after receiving a report of gunfire in the 2900 block of King Street in South Berkeley, between Russell Street and Ashby Avenue, at about 11:30 p.m.

According to scanner recordings reviewed by Berkeleyside, police received at least one call from someone who heard what sounded like gunfire. A male voice was also overheard yelling for someone to call 911, according to a dispatcher.

Officers responded to a home on King and arrested Carter on suspicion of attempted homicide. Berkeley Police Lt. Alyson Hart said the incident appeared to have been related to domestic violence. There were no reported injuries.

It was the second reported shooting of the night. Just before 9 p.m., police received numerous calls about a drive-by shooting in the 2200 block of Bonar Street, near Bancroft Way, in West Berkeley.

Police said a bullet broke through an apartment window in that incident, but resulted in no injuries. No arrests have been made in connection with the Bonar Street drive-by, Hart said, but investigators continue to work the case.

Hart said the incidents were not related.

Carter is being held without bail at Berkeley Jail and is scheduled for arraignment Monday at 2 p.m. at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.

Last year, police handled several shootings in close proximity in South and West Berkeley in March. In one of the shootings in South Berkeley, on Harmon Street, two teenagers were injured. Two others were injured in June during a shooting on Russell Street, just around the corner from Thursday night’s incident.
