A Berkeley resident surprised at home by several intruders Friday afternoon reminds the community to lock up over the holiday weekend.
The woman was home in the 100 block of Hillcrest Road in the Claremont neighborhood when the burglars came inside. She shared the news with neighbors over a local Yahoo email list.
“Our house was broken into around 3:10 this afternoon while I was home,” she wrote. “The intruders got spooked when our dogs barked and they realized I was there.”
She said the burglars got inside through a bathroom window “and tossed our bathroom and bedroom before fleeing through the same window.”
Police responded to the home, near Eucalyptus Road, and took a report.
The woman asked neighbors to let her know if they saw anything suspicious, adding, “lock your doors and windows this holiday weekend.”
Berkeley Police Lt. Jennifer Louis said there was “Not much more to the story than that.”
She added: “In fact that’s all there is to it, including the great crime prevention advice they gave.”
Earlier this month, alert neighbors worked together to help police catch several alleged robbers in the same area.
Police did not arrest anyone in connection with Friday’s home invasion.
In April, Berkeleyside reported a spike in home burglaries so far this year compared to 2014. This month, as of Thursday, there had been at least 57 burglaries in Berkeley, according to CrimeMapping.com: 39 home burglaries and 18 burglaries of businesses.
