One person was shot in South Berkeley early Friday morning, but is expected to survive, police said Friday afternoon.

Police responded to a shooting just after 5 a.m. near Ashby Avenue and Newbury Street, which is just west of Shattuck Avenue, said Lt. Alyson Hart of the Berkeley Police Department.

“This appears to be an attempted robbery that escalated to a shooting,” Hart said. “Reports are that the victim will survive and be out of the hospital within a few days.”

Limited suspect information was available. Police described the assailants as two males wearing hoodies.

One local resident told Berkeleyside that, as of about 8:30 a.m., “There are 5 cruisers and an SUV at the corner of Newbury Street and Ashby at the apartment building on the corner.”

Hart said she could not release any additional information “as we are in the early stage of the investigation.”

The last reported shooting in Berkeley also took place in the same vicinity, near Ashby and Shattuck on April 13.

In that incident, two men in their 20s were seriously injured, police said. Read more about that case.

There have been no reported homicides in 2015 in Berkeley, but police have responded to at least three other shootings this year.

There was an incident at Bancroft Way and Bonar Street in early February that involved no victims but did result in bullets piercing a nearby occupied apartment building. Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said previously that there was also a shooting Feb. 22 in the 1500 block of Harmon Street, but no further information has been provided.

In March, there was a shooting in broad daylight, at 62nd and King streets, that sent one man — reportedly an innocent bystander — to the hospital.

Berkeleyside will update this story if additional information becomes available.
