A man who threatened to have a gun robbed a downtown Berkeley bank Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said the department is investigating a robbery at Chase Bank, at 2390 Shattuck Ave., near Channing Way.
Coats said the call about the robbery came in at about 10:05 a.m.
“We are still in the process of investigating the incident,” she said at about 11:50 a.m. “I have reached out to our investigators for an update. Once I learn more I will pass it along.”
Berkeleyside reviewed a scanner audio recording for additional information.
According to the recording, the man threatened to have a gun, and left the bank on foot westbound on Channing.
No one at the bank reportedly saw a weapon, but the man gestured to his waistband to indicate that he had one.
The man was described as black, 35-40 years old, and 210-215 pounds with a heavy build. He had black hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing dirty blue jeans, a gray hoodie and a plaid shirt. He was also wearing glasses with a square frame, and had a UC Berkeley lanyard around his neck, according to the recording.
The FBI also was notified, due to the nature of the crime.
