Numerous Berkeley residents woke up just after 2:40 a.m. Tuesday due to a 4.0-magnitude earthquake reported north of Fremont.

At least eight aftershocks had been reported, following the original incident, as of 3:20 a.m.

According to the U.S. Geological Service, a 4.0-magnitude quake was reported at 2:41 a.m. 2 miles north of Fremont, about 30 miles from Berkeley.

On Twitter, local residents reported feeling the quake.

“Very slight swaying on fourth floor downtown Berkeley,” wrote one.

Many others said they felt it, too.

An aftershock with a magnitude of 1.9 was reported by the USGS in the same area north of Fremont at 2:48 a.m.

Another aftershock, magnitude 1.0, followed at 2:53 a.m., and a third, magnitude 2.7, was reported at 2:56 a.m.

A fourth, magnitude 1.9, came in at 2:59 a.m. A fifth, magnitude 2.1, was reported at 3 a.m.

At 3:07 a.m., another earthquake was reported, magnitude 2.6. This was followed at 3:16 a.m. by a quake of magnitude 1.3, and another at 3:19 a.m. of magnitude 1.2.
