Berkeleyside blotter: Crime in Berkeley, July 2-8

This overview of recent crime in Berkeley is based on reports to the Berkeley Police unless otherwise noted. From July 2-8, there were reports of five robberies, 12 burglaries, eight assaults or batteries, one weapon-involved call and one sexual assault, according to CrimeMapping.com. There were also 17 stolen vehicles, 14 disturbances and 28 auto break-ins or thefts from vehicles reported. Significant incidents reported by the University of California Police Department (UCPD) included two burglaries and a sex crime. These numbers are subject to change. The following items represent a sampling of calls, and times may be approximate; incidents that took place during a range of time are listed by the beginning of that time period.

Thursday, July 2

Five vehicles were stolen: at 3:20 a.m. in the 900 block of Page Street; at 6:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of California Street; at 7 a.m. in the 800 block of Bolivar Drive; at 3:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of Shattuck Avenue; and at 9 p.m. in the 1700 block of La Loma Avenue.

According to UCPD, a burglar broke into a locker at the Golden Bear Restaurant sometime before 10 a.m. and stole a diamond ring and two bottles of cologne. The items had a total estimated value of $1,090, according to UCPD. The incident is still under investigation.

There were two disturbance calls, at 12:15 p.m. in the 2000 block of University Avenue, and at 4:18 p.m. at Park Hills Road and Muir Way.

Police arrested Pierre Jolivette, 42, at 2:15 p.m. in connection with a Ramey warrant for robbery. (No additional information about the incident or arrest was readily available.) Jolivette remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail and was scheduled to enter a plea Thursday morning at the Hayward Hall of Justice.

There was a misdemeanor sexual assault at 2:30 p.m. in the 1400 block of University.

There was a robbery at 3:18 p.m. in the 2100 block of Oxford Street.

There was a commercial burglary at 11:03 p.m. in the 1200 block of San Pablo Avenue.

Friday, July 3

There were two disturbance calls, at midnight in the 1500 block of Tyler Street, and at 12:02 p.m. in the 2400 block of Cedar Street.

A vehicle was stolen at 6 p.m. in the 2800 block of Woolsey Street.

There was a home burglary at 9 p.m. in the 3200 block of Adeline Street.

There was a commercial burglary at 10:54 p.m. in the 2800 block of San Pablo Avenue.

Saturday, July 4

Two vehicles were stolen, at 12:01 a.m. in the 700 block of Whitaker Avenue, and at 4 p.m. at Ninth and Addison streets.

Via the BART Police: A victim reported that his or her 1998 Toyota Corolla was burglarized while parked in the west parking lot at the North Berkeley BART station, near Virginia Street, between 6:15 p.m. Friday and 12:15 a.m. Saturday. The victim said the rear driver’s side wing window had been shattered and the passenger compartment ransacked, but no items were taken.

There were three disturbance calls: at 2:43 a.m. in the 1700 block of Franklin Street; at 10:40 a.m. in the 3000 block of Telegraph Avenue; and at 2:49 p.m. in the 1800 block of San Pablo Avenue.

There was a home burglary at 9 p.m. in the 1700 block of University.

Sunday, July 5

A 19-year-old female student reported to UCPD that she had been the victim of sexual battery in Cleary Hall. According to UCPD, the incident took place Feb. 16.

Four vehicles were stolen: at 5 a.m. in the 1800 block of Delaware Street; at noon at an unlisted location; at 1 p.m. in the 1400 block of Oxford; and at 9 p.m. in the 1100 block of Hopkins Street.

There was a shooting at 1:38 p.m. in the 1600 block of Russell Street. According to Officer Jennifer Coats, Berkeley Police spokeswoman, officers responded to a report of a possible shooting in the area. Officers discovered “evidence that a shooting did occur,” but no victims were located. No additional information was provided. There was a disturbance at 3:19 p.m. at Fourth Street and University.

There was a home burglary at 7 p.m. in the 400 block of Poplar Street.

Monday, July 6

There was a disturbance at 1:41 a.m. at Delaware and Franklin streets.

There was a robbery at 5:15 p.m. in the 1200 block of San Pablo Avenue.

Via the BART Police: A patron reported that her gray Lightspeed 21-speed women’s road bike was stolen from the racks inside the paid area at Ashby BART between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The bike had been secured with a cable lock.

There were three stolen vehicles: at 7 p.m. in the 1900 block of 10th Street; at 9 p.m. in the 2200 block of 10th; and at 9:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of Arch Street.

There was a home burglary at 9 p.m. in the 2900 block of Ellis Street.

An Alameda County Superior Court judge ruled that three young men charged in the fatal shooting of a Pinole man in Berkeley in December must now stand trial. Read more on Berkeleyside.

Tuesday, July 7

Police handled a call involving a gun or other weapon at 12:27 a.m. in the 800 block of Bancroft Way.

There was a robbery at 8:45 a.m. in the 2100 block of Shattuck Avenue.

There were three disturbance calls: at 9:40 a.m. in the 2200 block of Shattuck; at 11:15 a.m. in the 3300 block of Adeline Street; and at 5:19 p.m. in the 2500 block of Telegraph Avenue.

Someone smashed a window at Cory Hall on the UC Berkeley campus and stole an Apple monitor and a QualComm tablet. The burglary took place between 5 p.m. Monday and 1:15 p.m. Tuesday.

There were two home burglaries, at 5 p.m. in the 1100 block of Francisco Street, and at 8 p.m. in the 1900 block of Grant Street.

There was a commercial burglary at 6 p.m. in the 2200 block of Sixth Street.

There was a report of arson at 11:50 p.m. in the 1200 block of Hopkins Street.

Wednesday, July 8

There were two home burglaries, at midnight at Whitney and Woolsey streets, and at 5:30 p.m. at Parker Street and McGee Avenue.

There were two disturbance calls, at 1 a.m. in the 1700 block of Addison Street, and at 5:18 p.m. in the 1500 block of Russell.

Two vehicles were stolen, at 5:20 a.m. in the 900 block of Grayson Street, and at 6 p.m. in the 1100 block of Walnut Street.

The Berkeley Fire Department responded to a fire sprinkler (water flow) alarm at a 2-story apartment building on University Avenue (near Acton Street) shortly after 7 a.m. Deputy Fire Chief Avery Webb said the sprinkler ultimately helped contain the fire. Arriving firefighters discovered smoke, and found a small fire in the partition between the first and second floors. The fire caused about $20,000 in damage. The cause appears to have been electrical in nature, said Webb, but is still under investigation. No injuries were reported. Two tenants were displaced, but property management provided alternate accommodations for them.

There were two robberies, at 3 p.m. at Shattuck and Dwight Way, and at 5:30 p.m. at Parker and McGee.

There was a commercial burglary at 6 p.m. in the 2500 block of Ninth Street.

Police arrested Christopher Gaglione, 42, in Richmond on a warrant in connection with a UCPD robbery case. Gaglione remains in custody and is scheduled for a sentencing hearing Aug. 13 at the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse in Oakland.

The death of a Berkeley woman whose body was found floating in the water near a Richmond park a week earlier appears now to be suspicious, and police are investigating. Read more on Berkeleyside.
