A motorcycle rider was taken to the hospital Tuesday night after police say he collided with a vehicle on University Avenue.

According to authorities, the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on University approaching Acton Street at about 7:35 p.m. when he collided with the passenger side of a sedan that was eastbound on University attempting to turn left onto Acton.

Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats said the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, where he is still being treated. The driver of the sedan was not injured.

Coats said the department received multiple 911 calls about the crash.

Berkeley Police Watch Commander Lt. Dan Montgomery said Tuesday that the motorcyclist was unconscious after the crash, and was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland for treatment.

Coats said traffic investigators were called in and are working to determine contributing factors to the collision.

“There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were a factor,” Coats said by email. “The investigation into the collision is ongoing.”

Berkeley police put out an advisory message over Nixle on Tuesday night at about 8:45 p.m. asking members of the public to avoid westbound University between Sacramento Street and Acton due to the crash.

In the Nixle alert, police described the motorcyclist’s injuries as “potentially life threatening,” and said the vehicle driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation.

Police closed westbound University around Acton Street during the investigation. Officers were on the scene until 2 a.m. Wednesday, Coats said.

Berkeleyside first reported the crash on Twitter and Facebook at approximately 8:40 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a community tip about it. Send public safety-related tips and photographs to Berkeleyside at crime@berkeleyside.com.
