Along with the explosion of food in the Bay Area, there has been an explosion of great food writing. This Sunday, Litquake, the annual eight-day-long literary festival that draws more than 800 writers, is holding a daylong event around the topic at Z Space in San Francisco.
Called Eat, Drink, and Be Literary: A Day-long Celebration of Books and Food, the day will feature numerous discussions on the Bay Area food scene and how we got here, as well as scrumptious snacks.
Participants can mingle with famous chefs, including Chez Panisse’s Cal Peternell, author of “Twelve Recipes,” Atelier Crenn’s Dominique Crenn, Flour + Water’s Thomas McNaughton, Cowgirl Creamery’s Sue Conley, Tartine’s Elizabeth Prueitt and Bay Area favorite Joyce Goldstein. Other food producers include Taylor Boetticher of Fatted Calf Charcuterie, Kathleen Weber of Della Fattoria, and Amy Guittard of Guittard Chocolate Company.

The writing side of the equation will include Paolo Lucchese of the San Francisco Chronicle and Carolyn Jung, the former food editor of the San Jose Mercury News, author of San Francisco Chef’s Table, and blogger at Food Gal. Connie Green, the author of The Wild Table will also be there, as will Chris Ying, editor of Lucky Peach.
Expect panel discussions on the growth and evolution of the artisanal food movement, the role Anchor Steam Brewery has played in San Francisco, a peek into how chefs and writers collaborate on cookbooks, a look at feral food, signings, and workshops on how to make wine at home.

As you would expect, there will be plenty to eat too, all included in the $35 ticket price. Elizabeth Prueitt of Tartine Bakery is bringing sweets. Carolyn Jung is bringing homemade cookies. There will be noodles from Noma Lim Noodle Bar, yummy spicy bites from Sosu Sauces, Moringa superfood bars and smoothies from Kuli Kuli, among other edibles.
There will also be booze: a coffee liqueur from St. George Spirits, cider from Angry Orchard, beer from Anchor Brewing Company, and wine from Broadside Winery.
Tickets to the event are $35 advance, and $40 at the door.
Eat, Drink, and Be Literary: Z Space, 450 Florida Street, Sunday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
