
EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM First thing to say is that this is tonight, Friday Nov. 6, with the first presentation starting at 5:45pm. Berkeley Research, Evaluation and Assessment (BREA) is hosting the return of the Berkeley Unified School District Research Symposium. The Symposium brings leading thinkers in current innovative educational research together with Berkeley community members, BUSD educators and parents. Presentations cover a range of topics: from social-emotional learning and adolescent neurology to equity issues in music education, new approaches to assessing student needs, topics in special education, and much more. Check-in begins at 5:15 pm at Longfellow Middle School and last presentation ends at8:30 pm. The event is free and childcare is on offer as are light refreshments. BERKELEY CIVIC CENTER ART SHOW OPENING The opening reception of the Berkeley Civic Center Art Show is also tonight, Friday Nov. 6 3-5 p.m. Each year, the Civic Center Art Exhibition and the City of Berkley celebrate the richness of artistic production within the community. The annual exhibition is produced through a collaborative effort by Berkeley Art Center, Kala Art Institute, the Civic Arts Commission and Civic Arts Coordinator. This year 35 Berkeley-based artists were selected through a juried process for exhibition in the Berkeley Martin Luther King Civic Center Building. If you can’t make the opening reception, don’t worry: the work is distributed throughout publicly accessible areas on six floors and will displayed for nine months, through May 2016. RACIAL JUSTICE FORUM On Saturday Nov. 7, 2-4 p.m., Representative Barbara Lee is hosting a forum on racial justice in Berkeley. It is being described as “an opportunity for East Bay residents to share their thoughts on how to build greater trust between law enforcement and communities of color.” The forum will screen excerpts of President Obama’s powerful eulogy after the shooting in Charleston. Afterwards, a youth-led panel will discuss their work and community members will have the opportunity to engage in a dialogue on racial justice. AN END TO THE AGE OF ENTITLEMENT On Saturday afternoon, the Brower Center will host a half-day conversation that will address one of the most pressing issues of our time: working land and access to it. Presented by the Brower Center in partnership with RSF Social Finance, the Yggdrasil Land Foundation and Berkeley Food Institute, the program will see John Bloom, author of An End to the Age of Entitlement, provide leading thoughts on reconsidering land ownership, use, and community. Speakers include Annie Burke of the Bay Area Open Space Council, Kate Danaher, Lending Manager at RSF Social Finance, Jered Lawson, Co-Founder and Co-Director of Pie Ranch, Valentin Lopez of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, and Nathan Sayre, Associate Professor of Geography at UC Berkeley. EASTSHORE STATE PARK DAY There will be a plethora of activities at McLaughlin Eastshore State Park on Sat. Nov. 7 as part of a celebration marking 30 years of advocacy by the Citizens for East Shore Parks group. Free activities include an early morning bird walk, dragon boats, a guided nature walk, a mobile visitor center, a Sierra Club walk from Emeryville to Berkeley and activities at the Shorebird Nature Center at the Berkeley Marina. A brunch at the Berkeley Yacht Club will honor Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, former East Bay Regional Park District General Manager Pat O’Brien and Norman La Force of the San Francisco Bay chapter of the Sierra Club.
