Update, 1:47 p.m. PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said the outage was caused by an underground equipment failure, and that power has been restored to all customers.

Update, 1:30 p.m. PG&E reports on its outage map that power has been restored to all but 39 Berkeley customers. An email notice sent by PG&E said power was restored to many customers at about 1:15 p.m.

Original post, 12:45 p.m. PG&E reports that 4,000 customers are without power in Berkeley and Oakland.

Agency spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian said, as of about 12:30 p.m., the outage was concentrated in South Berkeley and North Oakland, and that a technician was responding to the scene to determine what had caused the outage.

She said the apparent cause is still unknown, and that there is currently no estimate as to when power will be restored.

According to PG&E’s outage map, Berkeley has 11 outages impacting 1,547 people. The map estimates restoration time at 2:30 p.m.

According to the outage map, a large swath of central Berkeley, from University Avenue down into North Oakland has been impacted. Sarkissian said customers around Dwight Way, Stuart Street, Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Carleton Street, Bancroft Way, Addison Street and several others were without power.

As of 12:35 p.m., according to the outage map, “PG&E is assessing the cause at the outage location.”
