An Oakland man has been charged with groping eight young girls in a UC Berkeley pool over the summer.
The Alameda County district attorney’s office charged 38-year-old Ryan Lee McCorvie with eight felony counts alleging lewd acts upon a child under 14 years old.
District attorney’s office spokeswoman Teresa Drenick said Friday that McCorvie pled not guilty to the charges Dec. 2, and is set to return to court Dec. 21 for a procedural hearing. If convicted, he could be sent to state prison and would later be required to register as a sex offender.
Police arrested McCorvie in October on a warrant for committing lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14. Authorities said there were numerous victims but did not specify how many. Drenick said charges were not filed at that time because the case was still under investigation, and police said they were looking for additional victims.
Initially, the University of California Police Department said officers were looking for a man who groped several children Aug. 27 in UC Berkeley’s Strawberry Canyon Pool.
The popular pool is located on Centennial Drive east of Stadium Rim Way.
Police said the man groped several girls, ages 9 to 13, while they were swimming, and that he “swam up to each victim, grabbed their leg and/or buttocks then swam away.”
As of October, according to his LinkedIn profile, McCorvie was a graduate student in the UC Berkeley statistics department, where he was researching probability. He worked previously, according to the profile, for Goldman Sachs as a quantitative modeler and risk manager.
According to court documents, McCorvie has no prior convictions.
The University of California, Berkeley, placed McCorvie on administrative leave after his arrest, UCPD said in October.
Police ask anyone with information about the case to call the University of California Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau at 510-642-0472 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or 510-642-6760 at all other times.
