Many readers have been in touch with Berkeleyside asking about the strange big “structure” being erected on UC Berkeley property at Oxford Street.

We posted the answer on Twitter and Facebook earlier this week, but, in case you missed that, we can confirm it is a temporary tent to host the “Portal” opening gala party on Jan. 28 for the Berkeley Art Museum Pacific Film Archive, across the street from its new downtown Berkeley location. The gala, by the way, is all sold out.

The new museum flings open its doors to the public with a big Open House on Sunday Jan 31, starting at 11 a.m..

Before the museum opens, there’s a chance to hear architect Charles Renfro, of Diller Scofidio + Renfro talk about the design of the new BAMPFA at a free lecture on Jan. 27, 12-2 p.m.

There may also be a few tickets left for House:Party, a social event in the new building that follows the Portal gala, at 9 p.m. on Jan. 28. UC Berkeley students get to preview the Cal-owned museum on Jan. 29, and the Member Preview is on Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. See BAMPFA’s calendar for details of all these events.

The museum’s first exhibition, curated by BAMPFA director Lawrence Rinder, is “Architecture of Life” —  an international selection of over 250 works of art, architectural drawings and models, and scientific illustrations made over the past 2,000 years. The show will serve as an introduction to the whole of the new BAMPFA, in that it will occupy all of the gallery spaces in the museum, through May 29, 2016.

The Pacific Film Archive kicks off its program in its new digs on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. with a screening of a new 35-mm print of Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal, introduced by Barbro Osher, the Honorary Consul General of Sweden.

Finally, when it comes to matters of food and refreshments, Babette, which ran BAMPFA’s café in its Bancroft Way location, is slated to open in the dramatic cantilevered section of new building on Center Street in February.
