This overview of recent crime in Berkeley is based on reports to the Berkeley Police unless otherwise noted. From Jan. 21-27, there were reports of six robberies20 burglaries18 assaults or batteriesfour weapon-involved calls and one sexual assault, according to CrimeMapping.com. There were also 19 stolen vehicles21 disturbances and 46 auto break-ins or thefts from vehicles reported. A sex crime, and a burglary were reported to the University of California Police Department (UCPD). The following items represent a sampling of calls; incidents that took place during a range of time are listed unless otherwise noted by the beginning of that time period. Arrested individuals listed in this blotter are presumed innocent.

Thursday, Jan. 21

Two vehicles were stolen, at midnight in the 1900 block of Haste Street, and at 9 a.m. in the 2200 block of Blake Street.

Police responded to a business in the 3000 block of Adeline Street at about 3:20 p.m. after getting a call about someone “chasing two males with a machete,” said Officer Jennifer Coats, BPD spokeswoman, in response to a question from Berkeleyside. Officers determined that the males had tried to steal something from the store. “When the store owner demanded his property back, the two aggressively approached the owner. He grabbed the machete in order to protect himself and chased the two suspects out of the store.”

There was a home burglary at 4 p.m. in the 1400 block of Hawthorne Terrace.

Police were able to disarm a 19-year-old Berkeley man with a knife after responding to a report of a disturbance near Addison and 10th streets at about 5:05 p.m. Said Berkeley Police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Coats, the initial call indicated a vehicle may have been shot. Witnesses directed officers to a man who may have been involved, and he was seen walking behind a home in the 1000 block of Allston Way: “As the officers attempted to locate the subject, they saw him walking towards them holding a knife in his hand, with the blade displayed. Officers gave him orders to drop the knife, he refused several times, saying he wasn’t going back to jail. The officers continued to talk with the subject and eventually convinced him to put down the knife.” Coats said officers saw that the teen appeared to be having a medical problem and were able to get him to the ground and call for help from the Berkeley Fire Department. The man was taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

There were two disturbances, at 6:55 p.m. in the 1400 block of Alcatraz Avenue, and at 11:33 p.m. in the 2700 block of Channing Way.

There was a commercial burglary at 9:15 p.m. in the 2800 block of Sacramento Street.

There was a felony assault or battery at 10:15 p.m. in the 2300 block of Telegraph Avenue.

There was a robbery at 11:39 p.m. at Blake and Ellsworth streets.

Friday, Jan. 22

Three vehicles were stolen: at 1 a.m. in the 2400 block of Shattuck Avenue; at 2 p.m. in the 1200 block of Peralta Avenue; and at 7 p.m. at Eighth and Delaware streets.

There was a home burglary at 7:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of Josephine Street.

There were two disturbance calls, at 10:25 a.m. in the 2000 block of Shattuck Avenue, and at 9:15 p.m. at University Avenue and 10th Street.

There were two robberies, at 1 p.m. at Bancroft Way and McKinley Avenue, and at 11:20 p.m. in the 2200 block of Parker Street.

Via UCPD: An attempted armed robbery occurred in the 2200 block of Parker. Four 19-year-old women were approached by two men, one of whom had a handgun. The men “pocket checked” the victims, police said, but did not take anything. The men fled in an known direction. They were in their mid-20s, one looked 5 foot 6 and the other looked 5 foot 8. They both had medium builds. One wore a black hooded sweatshirt and the other wore a gray hooded sweatshirt.

There was a call involving a gun or other weapon at 5 p.m. at Milvia and Haste streets.

There was a second-response call at 11:51 p.m. in the 2600 block of Regent Street.

Saturday, Jan. 23

There were two robbery calls, at 12:20 a.m. at Sacramento Street and Ashby Avenue, and at 3:30 a.m. at Piedmont Avenue and Channing Way.

There was a felony sexual assault at 12:45 a.m. in the 900 block of Gilman Street.

There was a felony assault or battery at 1 a.m. in the 1900 block of Center Street.

There were four second-response calls: at 1 a.m. in the 2500 block of Benvenue Avenue; at 10:39 p.m. in the 2700 block of Dana Street; at 11:05 p.m. in the 2200 block of Ward Street; and at 11:19 p.m. in the 2400 block of Blake Street.

There was a disturbance call at 2:10 a.m. in the 2700 block of College Avenue.

Someone reportedly brandished a weapon at 1:20 p.m. in the 1600 block of San Pablo Avenue.

Two vehicles were stolen, at 10 p.m. at Eighth Street and Hearst Avenue, and at 11 p.m. in the 1100 block of Kains Avenue.

Sunday, Jan. 24

There was a second-response call at 1:24 a.m. in the 2500 block of Dana Street.

There were three disturbance calls: at 1:38 a.m. in the 2400 block of Telegraph Avenue; at 2:10 a.m. in the 2600 block of Etna Street; and at 4:30 p.m. in the 2400 block of Warring Street.

Someone reportedly brandished a weapon at 10:22 a.m. at Shattuck Avenue and Allston Way.

Five vehicles were stolen: at 11 a.m. in the 1800 block of Sonoma Avenue; at 3:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Center Street; at 7 p.m. in the 2700 block of Fulton Street; at 7 p.m. in the 100 block of The Plaza Drive; and at 8:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Solano Avenue.

Police arrested 52-year-old Robert Ingalls on a warrant for robbery. He remains in custody with a bail of $50,000 and is scheduled for a preliminary examination Monday, Feb. 8, at the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in downtown Oakland.

Police stopped a 45-year-old motorist for a traffic violation at about 11:15 p.m. near San Pablo and Ashby avenues. Said Officer Byron White, a BPD spokesman, “officers made the usual contact at the driver’s side door (driver’s license, registration, insurance).” The driver said he did not have his license. In response to police questions about his identity, he rolled up his windows and locked himself in the vehicle, White said. “After not having any success getting the driver to open the door after several attempts, officers had to break-in the vehicle’s windows and forcibly remove the driver.” He was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest, driving with a suspended and/or revoked license, and several other vehicle and municipal codes. The Oakland man was cited and released several hours later. Charges do not appear to have been filed by the Alameda County district attorney’s office, according to available records online.

There was a felony assault or battery at 11:45 p.m. at Telegraph Avenue and Derby Street.

Monday, Jan. 25

Four homes were burglarized: at 8:30 a.m. in the 1400 block of Lincoln Street; at 11:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of Short Street; at 7 p.m. in the 2500 block of Webster Street; and at 8 p.m. at an unlisted location.

There were two disturbance calls, at noon in the 1400 block of Hearst, and at 7:10 p.m. in the 1800 block of Fourth Street. In the second call, police arrested Malik Jackson, 20, on a warrant alleging several firearm-related violations. He remains in custody at Santa Rita Jail and is scheduled for a report and sentence hearing Feb. 26.

There was a felony assault or battery at 12:07 p.m. in the 1300 block of Ward Street.

A vehicle was stolen at 3 p.m. in the 2900 block of San Pablo Avenue.

There was a commercial burglary at 6:30 p.m. in the 2900 block of Telegraph Avenue.

There was a robbery at 9:34 p.m. in the 3000 block of Shattuck Avenue.

Tuesday, Jan. 26

There were three disturbance calls: at 1:13 a.m. in the 1400 block of Alcatraz Avenue; at 4:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of Hillegass Avenue; and at 2:50 p.m. in the 3100 block of Claremont Avenue.

There were four home burglaries: at 7 a.m. in the 2400 block of Fifth Street; at 8:45 a.m. in the 2800 block of Telegraph Avenue; at 9:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Bay Tree Lane; and at 11:59 p.m. in the 2500 block of Webster Street.

Three vehicles were stolen: at 9:58 a.m. in the 1300 block of Fifth; at 4 p.m. at Dwight Way and College Avenue; and at 9 p.m. in the 1300 block of Sacramento Street.

A man in Cloyne Court reported to UCPD that someone had sexually assaulted him via forced oral copulation in 2008.

There was a call involving a gun or other weapon at 5:15 p.m. in the 6400 block of Shattuck Avenue.

There was a commercial burglary at 10 p.m. in the 2400 block of Sacramento Street.

Wednesday, Jan. 27

Three vehicles were stolen: at midnight in the 1600 block of Oregon Street; at 8 a.m. in the 2800 block of Adeline Street; and at 8 p.m. in the 1300 block of Arch Street.

There were six home burglaries: at midnight in the 2900 block of Lorina Street; at 6:45 a.m. in the 700 block of Wildcat Canyon Road; at 10:45 a.m. in the 200 block of Hill Road; at 1:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of Curtis Street; at 1:45 p.m. in the 1400 block of Stannage Avenue; and at 7:45 p.m. in the 2200 block of Dwight Way.

There were two disturbance calls, at 12:08 a.m. in the 2300 block of Durant Avenue, and at 2:04 a.m. in the 1600 block of Russell Street.

There was a commercial burglary at 2:53 a.m. in the 800 block of Heinz Avenue.
