Police responded to South Berkeley, near Tremont and Prince streets near Ashby BART station, for a report of a shooting with a male victim in the area shortly after 1 a.m.

At 1:20 a.m., Berkeley police were called to a local hospital for a report of a female victim who had been dropped off there with gunshot wounds.

One local resident told Berkeleyside she heard the sound of a car speeding off near Woolsey Street and Shattuck Avenue, followed by “a mass of sirens.”

The information that appears here was reported over the scanner but, shortly after publication, police confirmed the accuracy of this report.

Originally the call came in at 1:05 a.m. with callers reporting 4-5 gunshots heard near the 2000 block of Prince.

One caller told police a possible victim was in a doorway on a porch in the 2000 block of Prince. He appeared to be a man in his 20s.

Police responded to the scene to take witness statements, and recovered shell casings at Tremont and Prince.

An officer identified the shooting scene as a vehicle on Tremont. There was blood inside the vehicle and on the sidewalk nearby, he said over the scanner, and a window was broken.

Police said the woman was unresponsive due to her wounds. The male confirmed to police he had been with her prior to the shooting.

It was the second shooting in less than 24 hours in Berkeley. Shortly before noon Tuesday, police responded to a shooting on Delaware Street. One person was injured. There have been no updates on his condition.

Update, 6:25 a.m. Both victims were in critical condition at a local hospital as of Wednesday morning, said Sgt. Andrew Frankel, Berkeley Police spokesman. No further updates were immediately available.

Update, 11:50 a.m. Frankel said BPD does not believe the Tremont Street shooting was random, and it appears unlikely that the incident is related to Tuesday’s shooting on Delaware.

There is no suspect description to share at this point, he said. No update was available regarding victim conditions.

The Berkeley Police Department is asking community members to call 510-981-5900 if they wish to share information about this week’s shootings.

Update, 1:30 p.m. No weapons have been recovered, Frankel said.

Update, March 17, 9:35 a.m. Police say the vehicle involved in the early Wednesday morning shooting at Tremont and Prince had Uber and Lyft stickers on its windshield. Uber has said it “was not actively in service with their company,” Frankel reported in an update Thursday morning. “We have not yet determined if the car was in service by a Lyft operator when the incident occurred.”

Frankel said the two victims remain in critical condition at Highland. No one has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing.

This story was updated shortly after publication. Berkeleyside will continue to update this post if additional information becomes available Wednesday.
