Update, April 27: BFD says the rough monetary value of the damage caused by the fire and burst water pipe is $100,000. BFD also confirmed that they went back to the apartment building later on the night of April 26 to handle “a small amount of burning material in the attic.”

Original story: Approximately 30 residents of an apartment building on the corner of Shattuck Avenue and Delaware Street in Berkeley were displaced Tuesday evening following a fire and subsequent water damage, according to authorities.

Berkeley Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Donna McCracken said BFD responded with a first-alarm assignment to the residential building which has businesses at the street level, including, on the Shattuck side, Corso restaurant at 1788 Shattuck. Photos show fire crews tackling the fire from the Delaware side of the building.

Two apartments were damaged by the fire that broke out in the ceiling space, according to McCracken. A water pipe then ruptured, which helped to control the fire, but also caused water damage to four apartments, she said.

“Gas, power and water are off to the building,” McCracken told Berkeleyside. “Residents will not be allowed back in for an undetermined time.” McCracken estimated that 30 residents had been displaced and said the Red Cross was on scene helping people find alternative accommodation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
