UberEATS launched its food delivery service in the East Bay this week, having started in San Francisco three months ago.

The app-based service, which offers free food delivery from restaurants in Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Piedmont and Emeryville, joins a relatively crowded field. Competitors operating in the East Bay include Caviar, DoorDash, Munchery, PostMates and Eat24.

Restaurants listed on UberEATS include Duende, Calavera, Zachary’s Pizza, Doughnut Dolly’s, Rosamunde Sausage Grill and Trattoria La Siciliana.

UberEATS said the East Bay was a “natural choice” for expansion as the Uber service itself is popular and it has a “vibrant and growing” restaurant scene.

Using the UberEATS app customers have access to menus of the participating restaurants, with food available from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. After placing an order, customers can track its progress with the  app and then UberX drivers deliver the food to the door. A receipt is then emailed to the customers. The delivery is free, which contrasts with most of its competitors.

“We are thrilled to expand the UberEATS app into the East Bay… this expansion more than doubles our geographic coverage. From Dosa in the Mission to Zachary’s Pizza in Oakland, even more delicious food is available at the touch of a button starting today,” said Susan Alban, uberEVERYTHING general manager in a release.

Although not a direct competitor as it delivered prepared food rather than restaurant-made dishes, the Berkeley-founded SpoonRocket failed in this market in March after failing to raise the necessary capital to continue.
