WALL ART AT BAMPFA – Check out the monumental weaving by East Bay artist Terri Friedman at BAMPFA. This is the second work in the museum’s new Art Wall series of commissioned temporary works. Friedman describes her recent embrace of weaving as a means to extend her exploration of painting. “Weaving color. Yarn as paint. For years I have investigated painting through everyday materials: kinetic sculpture, installation, painted pours. And that is exactly how I approach the loom. Expanding material limits, diving into color, redefining landscapes, interested in invention and innovation yet borrowing from tradition.” $10-$12. BAMPFA, 2155 Center St.

COASTAL CLEANUP DAY Saturday, Sept. 17 is Coastal Cleanup Day, a chance for Berkeleyans to celebrate our bay, creeks, and wetlands. The annual volunteer event is the largest in the state. In 2014, nearly 67,000 participants removed more than 1,190,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from California’s beaches, lakes, and waterways. In Alameda County, volunteers can choose from a wide range of cleanup events throughout September, organized by public agencies and nonprofit groups. There will be volunteers along the Berkeley shoreline, at the Albany Bulb, and in many other spots. To view a calendar of local cleanup and restoration events visit the volunteer page of the Clean Water Program website or refer to this map put out by the California Coastal Commission.
