Two residents were displaced following a duplex fire in northwest Berkeley on Wednesday night.
Assistant Berkeley Fire Chief Keith May said firefighters responded at 8:20 p.m. for a report of smoke seen coming from a heater in a single-story duplex in the 1100 block of Virginia Street. That’s near the Berkeley Adult School.
Readers asked Berkeleyside about the response. Torrie LM wrote on Twitter that it was “the most fire trucks I’ve ever seen in one place. Virginia is blocked off where it intersects with San Pablo.”
Firefighters reported over the radio that they were down to one engine available in the city, as the others worked on the Virginia Street incident.
May said it turned out a fire had started in a hallway floor furnace, which firefighters removed.
The fire was declared under control by 8:47 p.m., according to scanner traffic reviewed by Berkeleyside.
The American Red Cross helped find lodging for two residents who were displaced, May said.
