Berkeley is blessed with dozens of public pathways and steps, many of which offer the opportunity to escape urban street life and immerse oneself in nature — often while taking advantage of a shortcut. The paths were laid out in the original city maps in the early 1900s and are maintained and promoted by the Berkeley Path Wanderers Association which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
