Update, Aug. 21: The victim of an assault who was found in Southside Berkeley early Tuesday morning is in stable condition and is expected to be released from the hospital in the near future, Berkeley Police spokesman Officer Byron White told Berkeleyside on Wednesday. The 56-year-old man, whose address is unknown, is believed to have been “beaten/struck in the head and neck with some sort of blunt object (pipe, stick, etc),” White said by email. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Original story: A man who was found on Channing Way with major injuries in the early hours Tuesday was taken to the hospital and is now in critical condition, according to the Berkeley Police Department.

The cause of the man’s injuries has yet to be confirmed and no arrests have been made, authorities said. The University of California Police Department described the incident as an “assault with a deadly weapon” in a Nixle alert put out Tuesday around 8 a.m.

Officer Byron White, spokesman for the Berkeley Police Department, told Berkeleyside that BPD officers were flagged down about an injured man on the steps of 2425 Channing Way, at Telegraph Avenue, at 1:56 a.m. The man, who was around 40-50 years old, was unconscious and had serious head injuries, White said.

“He was bleeding profusely and it was difficult to determine what caused it,” White said.

The man was taken to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.

BPD asks anyone who has information about this incident to call BPD’s Homicide Unit at 510-981-5741.
