Update, Dec. 14: Two Oakland women who were wounded in a highway shooting in Oakland on Saturday night are being treated for their injuries at the hospital as of Monday afternoon, according to an update from the California Highway Patrol.

A 27-year-old woman was driving with her 33-year-old female passenger on eastbound Highway 580 west of Highway 24 when they were both shot. The driver, who was shot in the right arm, called 911 at 9:36 p.m. to report the shooting, and said her passenger was shot in the stomach.

She told police that she drove herself and her passenger to the hospital after the shooting, according to the CHP. Berkeley police initially responded to the shooting and arrived at Alta Bates in Berkeley, but handed over the case to CHP after they learned it happened on the highway.

Family were waiting outside Alta Bates on Saturday night, and one woman identified herself as the driver’s sister and the passenger’s best friend. They had both been at her home in San Francisco earlier the same night, and her sister called her shortly after leaving to say she had been shot on the highway and they were on their way to the hospital.

One of the women was transferred to Highland Hospital in Oakland after arriving at Alta Bates.

The CHP said the person believed to have shot the women fled the scene immediately, and officers don’t currently have any information about them or their vehicle. The CHP investigation is ongoing.
