Two men were killed by an Amtrak train as they stood on the tracks and waited for a freight train to pass. It was something they had done dozens of times, but the action went horribly awry Thursday.
The collision happened near the Amtrak station off University Avenue.

An eastbound Amtrak train struck a man who was on the train tracks near West Berkeley’s Gilman crossing Tuesday morning at around 9:30 a.m., according to Union Pacific spokesman Francisco Castillo.
