Charles Jones has been charged with the murder of Sereinat’e Henderson and the attempted murder of several relatives with her during the shooting.
“This incident is currently being actively investigated,” BPD said.
The shooter said he was defending himself after intervening in a domestic dispute where a woman had asked for help, according to court papers.
Police responded to Prince and California streets just before 5 p.m. for the shooting reports.
“We don’t lose people like that in our family,” Henderson’s cousin told Berkeleyside. “It was just like somebody had stabbed me in my heart.”
Citing an “alarming rise in shootings” this year, officials pledged Tuesday night to work to create a new Ceasefire program designed to “address gun violence” in Berkeley.
Some of the money will help create a fund for Sereinat’e Henderson’s 10-month-old son, organizers said.
The Berkeley Police Department announced a $50,000 reward Friday to help find the killer of Sereinat’e Henderson.
“She was a little thing but she had the biggest spirit,” Sereinat’e Henderson’s mother-in-law told Berkeleyside on Thursday night.
A man who was hit by a driver in South Berkeley has been taken to Highland Hospital for treatment, authorities report.
“I didn’t think I was going to get shot, but that’s what happened,” testified Janelle Davis on Wednesday.
