The vote, by the Berkeley School Board, takes the possibility of revocation of REALM’s charter off the table for now.
REALM Middle School has until April to provide a remedy plan for its fiscal issues, or BUSD could vote to revoke its charter.
The construction project, one of BUSD’s largest in years, will be funded by Measure I revenue.
As the city attempts to reopen negotiations on sharing a meeting room, records obtained by Berkeleyside and conversations with both sides shed light on why past efforts failed.
“Let’s put forward our best proposal,” said Mayor Jesse Arreguín. “If they accept it, great. If not, we’ll build this facility.”
Students will be relocated for the year of renovations. The community can hear about the modernization plans at a meeting tonight.
After much back-and-forth, REALM will continue leasing a small space at the site from the Berkeley Unified School District.
BUSD plans to use bond funds to renovate West Campus and the Berkeley High Community Theater, among other projects.
