A woman was in intensive care at Highland Hospital after a motorist drove into her as she was walking in Southwest Berkeley Wednesday.

Police said the collision happened just before 3 p.m. at Heinz Avenue and Seventh Street.

A motorist was driving west on Heinz and turned left — southbound —  onto Seventh, police said. The woman was walking in the other direction on the southern side of Heinz in a crosswalk when the motorist struck her.

“The pedestrian sustained a traumatic head injury and was transported to Highland Hospital,” Berkeley police spokesperson Officer Jessica Perry said in an email. “The driver remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation.”

Perry said the pedestrian, who is in her 50s, was still in the hospital’s intensive care unit Thursday.

The intersection is controlled by a traffic light with vehicles moving in all four directions. All four sides of the intersection have crosswalks.

The police department sent an email alert shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday asking motorists to avoid Seventh between Ashby Avenue and Pardee Street after the crash and investigation closed roads in the area. The department’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team is looking into the crash.

The crash came just three days after the death of Julia Elkin, a 37-year-old Berkeley resident whom another motorist struck as Elkin was jogging at Marin Avenue and Oxford Street. Elkin was struck Feb. 12 and died of her injuries Sunday.
