Berkeley police are investigating a shooting they say began as a “road rage incident” in South Berkeley Tuesday afternoon.
Police first received a report of a shooting around 1:45 p.m. near Fairview and Adeline streets, police said.
“It was reported that the suspect fled the area before police arrived,” Berkeley police spokesperson Officer Jessica Perry said in an email.
Officers at the scene determined that the shooting had actually taken place in the 3100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way “and stemmed from a road rage incident between two drivers,” Perry said. “One of the involved drivers shot at the other vehicle in the argument, causing a vehicle collision.”
There were no injuries reported and, as of Tuesday afternoon, no arrests made, though officers were still investigating, Perry said.
The Berkeley Police Department sent a Nixle alert shortly after 2 p.m. asking people to avoid Adeline Street between Woolsey and Fairview streets, writing that “vehicular and pedestrian traffic … will be impacted.” In a second Nixle shortly after 3 p.m. police advised that the area had been cleared and all roads and walkways were reopened.
There were several gunfire incidents in 2023 within three blocks of this most recent one. Two of those shootings, on Aug. 10 and Dec. 24, left victims wounded.
