BART has restored service at its North Berkeley station after a train “may have” struck a person, the person’s wheelchair or both, according to a spokesperson.

“The incident first began at 3:30 this afternoon with an individual reported to be in the trackway,” Jim Allison, a spokesperson for BART, said in a prepared message.

A train was approaching, and “there was a collision that may have involved the wheelchair and possibly the individual himself,” Allison said.

The Berkeley Fire Department rescued the person from the trackway, Allison said.

“We don’t have any information on how the person entered the trackway but there is no foul play suspected at this time,” Allison said.

All service to the station stopped at first, but BART had restored service on one track and was working on restoring it on the other a little over an hour later, Allison said. The Red and Orange lines, which stop at North Berkeley, returned to full service shortly before 5 p.m.

Information on the condition of the person rescued was not immediately available. Allison said BART police were investigating “as is standard procedure.”
